Step 1: Have an Idea
The first step to building your own website is to have a great website idea. You want to come up with something you are passionate about, or at least interested in to build your own website. Passion and interest are the key forces to keeping your website alive and running.
When thinking bout what kind of website to build, ask yourself, “what do I want to get out of my website?”. This part is very important because if we don’t fully establish what kind of website we really want to build, then we risk losing interest in it in the long run, or end up switching domain names and ideas from the lack of initial focus.
I recommend reading these articles, so that you can get some more website ideas:
Step 2: Get Quality Web Hosting
Once you have an idea of what kind of website you’d like to build, you then need quality web hosting that offers these 4 things:
- Unlimited Disk Space / Bandwidth
- Dedicated Server(s)
- A FREE Domain name
- Easy Install for WordPress
In short, you want to have unlimited disk space and bandwidth to avoid getting charged extra for going over some made up limit. You also want to get a dedicated server for your website so that you can have more control in the long run. A dedicated server is better than a shared server, especially for SEO (search engine optimization) and security. Your web hosting should also offer you a FREE domain name to register so that you can save time and money. And lastly, make sure your web hosting service has a one-click install or easy-install for WordPress. This will save you hours of frustration when installing and setting up your CMS (content management system), WordPress.

Step 3: Choose a Domain Name
When choosing a domain name, you want to choose something that’s memorable and easy to type to build your own website. This domain name will be what everyone enters in the URL bar on their computers, tablets and mobile phones, so keep it simple. Remember, most people are used to typing .com, so that’s the recommended extension when choosing a domain name (unless you need a .org for a non-profit website). Also, for more tips on how to choose a domain name, and domain name ideas:

Remember, you don’t have to pay extra for a domain name, since IX Webhosting gives you a FREE domain name registration. If you plan on buying more domain names, you can purchase them yourself from 1and1.com or another website. Or you can upgrade your IX Webhosting plan to get more FREE domain name registrations.
Step 4: Install WordPress
The biggest reason you should install WordPress is the ability to use their content management system (CMS). This means that you have full access to your website’s admin section to change and update your website at anytime, anywhere.

Also, WordPress is great for blogging. But it’s not only for blogging; it;s great for Portfolio sites, Photography sites, Videography sites, Showcasing products and services, and shopping carts. Here’s a few examples of websites that I helped get up-and-running with WordPress:

Step 5: Customize Your Website
After you install WordPress you can now style your website to look how you want it. My recommendation is to purchase a premium WordPress theme to take advantage of all the great features without having to code yourself. But, if you want you can always start with a FREE WordPress theme and use that as a start. Remember, since WordPress is so flexible, you can always change your theme within seconds by just clicking a few buttons.

Step 6: Adding Content and Promoting
You want to add quality content to your website that will help your visitors in some way, shape, or form. Content is king, and quality is Queen. Having a website is great, but if it’s empty then nobody will want to visit it more then once. You need to create something of value in order to attract more people.
Blogging is a great way to add valuable content to your website, and this is exactly what I’m doing right now in this post. I want to help you get your website up and running properly, and if you are reading this then I’m guessing you are interested in bulding or improving your website!
When promoting your website, I recommend signing up and being active on social netowrks like Facebook and Twitter. Depending on your brand and website, different social networks will work for you. Here’s a few tips on promoting your website:

In addition to promoting your website, you will start getting visitors from search engines like Google. To optimize your chances of being on the top pages of Google, you must focus on SEO or search engine optimization. My biggest tip for beginners is to just focus on filling out these things:
- URL of your page – Name this properly using your main subject or keyword phrase
- The title – Name this properly using your main subject or keyword phrase
- Body Content – Mention your subject or keyword phrases here
- Meta – Mention your subject or keyword phrases here
Not sure what this means? I recommend using a WordPress plugin called Yoast to get started. If I were you, I would log into my WordPress admin section and look up and search for a plugin called “YOAST”, and download / activate it. This will allow you optimize each of your blog posts or pages, and it will guide you / rate you in your SEO. Basically it not only tells you how you’re SEO is, it shows you HOW TO IMPROVE IT. Here’s the actual company’s website:
